Cut the Rope

Cut the Rope (AppStore Link) Cut the Rope
Developer: Chillingo Ltd

Rated: 4+5
Price: $0.99 Download

Developer:

Not much is known about ZeptoLab, developer of Cut the Rope. An independent Russian developer, that hasn’t given out much information. What is known though is that this game was published by Chillingo, arguably the most successful publishers on the AppStore, responsible for games such as Angry Birds, Cogs, Guerilla Bob, Minigore, Modern Conflict and dozens of other top selling Appstore games.

Graphics:

Cut the Rope uses bright, cartoonish graphics, with an emphasis on warm colors and a happy atmosphere. Amazingly cute and cuddly, this creates a warm, fuzzy setting, that is further enforced by the lovable monster Om Nom. The game is full of soap bubbles, stars, candy, and other childhood symbols that make you smile every time you start

a new level.

Om Nom is undeniably one of the cutest and cuddliest green monsters you’ve ever seen, always smiling

a big smile.

The bright graphics, cartoonish feel and holiday-like atmosphere that the game provides look amazing on the iDevice, and manage to keep the levels fun, never becoming an eyesore.

Gameplay:

Throughout the AppStore’s existence there have been numerous attempts at creating fun physics based games. And a lot of them have gotten it right, such as Paper Toss, Angry Birds, etc. But only a handful of games manage to mix a good physics engine with a good puzzle game and a great atmosphere. Cut the Rope manages to mix these

together in one epic game.

The purpose of Cut the Rope is to (as expected) cut some ropes. The ropes hold up a piece of candy that you need to direct towards a hungry green monster that’s waiting for it at the bottom of the screen.

Numerous special obstacles await though, so besides simply choosing when to cut which rope, you have to take into account the trajectory, coupled with how the trajectory will be changed when the piece of candy touches some of these obstacles.

Cut the Rope is jam packed with highly addictive action, as you will find yourself repeating levels multiple times to get it right. A lot of work was obviously put into designing the levels, and making them difficult, while not impossible.

UI:

The game’s UI is simple and helpful. There are no complicated multiple steps to go through. The design itself is simple, bright and colorful and includes the usual options that most handheld device games offer.

Innovation:

Cut the Rope manages to mix puzzle games with physics engine games. The greatest amount of work obviously went into designing the levels, and making sure they can be solved (most of them in multiple ways).

Verdict:

Cut the rope manages to deliver addictive gameplay through numerous levels that will tease your brain, a beautiful bright atmosphere that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, and a cute green monster that you get to feed. What more can you want?
